Homemade Clove Mouthwash

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

This easy-to-make mouthwash only needs three natural ingredients, has no hidden nasties, and if you use a glass jar it's zero waste.

For Ayurveda to be accessible and easy to implement the ingredients you use should be easy to find - as easy as your kitchen cupboard!

Ever since discovering the impact shop-bought items have on the environment (nasty chemicals, single-use plastic), I've sought to replace them with homemade and chemical-free ones. This #DIY #mouthwash is so simple and effective and won't break the bank.

Throughout history, cloves have been revered for their medicinal purposes, but they really stand out when used for oral hygiene because of their antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

If you happen to have a toothache, the main compound eugenol has strong analgesic properties and could help to relieve some of the pain from its numbing effect.

Cloves combined with cinnamon and peppermint create a powerful mixture to fight off bad breath and keep your gums healthy as they reduce the bacteria that cause gum disease and promote a healthy oral biome.

Recipe

1 cup of (filtered) water

1 tsp whole cloves

1 tsp ground cinnamon and/or cinnamon sticks

4 drops peppermint essential oil (ideally one that can be ingested; I use #DoTerra)

Boil the water, take it off the heat and add all ingredients.

Leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes.

Strain the mixture, pour into a glass bottle/jar and allow to cool.

It's that easy!
